The issue is that map becomes hardly usable, despite a walking route is often needed to reach the nearest station at the moment.

A better solution would be to switch to a Public Transport style when enabling the subway/metro layer.

Another idea is to reduce opaqueness of the white-ish layer upon zooming in.

This way a good schematic overview of the subway network will be preserved on overview zooms and at the same time subway station's surroundings won't be obscured at the detailed zooms.
