Intel ax210 on Pop!_OS 20.10

The ax210 is officially supported on 5.10, and Pop 20.10 is still on 5.8

Output from lspci

02:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Device 2725 (rev 1a)

Output from lsusb

Bus 003 Device 119: ID 8087:0032 Intel Corp.

Booting with kernel 5.8

sudo dmesg | grep iwl

Nothing!

sudo dmesg | grep Blue

[ 336.247154] Bluetooth: hci0: Intel Read version failed (-22) [ 336.247179] Bluetooth: hci0: Intel reset sent to retry FW download

Install 5.10.1 on Pop

Note: this breaks nVidia drivers

Use the mainline tool for this.

The ppa does not currently offer a version for Groovy Gorilla, but can be installed using:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:cappelikan/ppa
sudo apt update
sudo apt install mainline

So I'm building it from git.

Prerequisites

sudo apt install gettext libgee-0.8-dev libjson-glib-dev libvte-2.91-dev valac aria2 lsb-release aptitude

Clone and build

git clone https://github.com/bkw777/mainline.git
cd mainline
make
sudo make install

Install 5.10.1

Find the latest mainline kernel

sudo mainline --check

The output of this should look something like:

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Found installed: 5.8.0.7630.32~1606339263~20.10~61c3910
Found installed: 5.8.0-7630.32~1606339263~20.10~61c3910
----------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Latest update: 5.10.1
Latest point update: 5.8.18
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Then issue:

sudo mainline --install-latest

And say yes when pointed to the kernel you want.

Then reboot to apply the new kernel.

Boot with kernel 5.10.1

uname -a

gives

Linux pluto 5.10.1-051001-generic #202012142031 SMP Mon Dec 14 20:36:58 UTC 2020 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

So the kernel is good. Let's see if things changed for the wifi.

sudo dmesg | grep iwl

now gives:

[ 3.328859] iwlwifi 0000:02:00.0: Direct firmware load for iwlwifi-ty-a0-gf-a0-39.ucode failed with error -2
[ 3.328861] iwlwifi 0000:02:00.0: no suitable firmware found!
[ 3.328866] iwlwifi 0000:02:00.0: minimum version required: iwlwifi-ty-a0-gf-a0-39
[ 3.328868] iwlwifi 0000:02:00.0: maximum version supported: iwlwifi-ty-a0-gf-a0-59
[ 3.328869] iwlwifi 0000:02:00.0: check git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git

This means we also need the firmware. We can try updating linux-firmware, but this will only install the version for Groovy Gorilla from the PPA, which is for kernel 5.8. So it's of no use.

Remember: It says we need iwlwifi-ty-a0-gf-a0-39 to iwlwifi-ty-a0-gf-a0-59

As for Bluetooth, we get:

sudo dmesg | grep Blue

[ 286.481105] Bluetooth: hci0: Intel Read version failed (-22)
[ 286.481129] Bluetooth: hci0: Intel reset sent to retry FW download

same as before.

So we need firmware for both WiFi and Bluetooth

Install new firmware

Let's look at the site that is mentioned in the dmesd output.

That takes us (via google) to the kernel git site

Look for the youngest age commit, currently 2020-11-30 (or just the latest after that date).

It takes you here

It is this file: linux-firmware-7455a36066741a6e52fba65e04f6451b4cdfd9c4.tar.gz

Download it from here

It takes some time, it is around 300MB

Uncompress the file with tar -zxvf linux-firmware-7455a36066741a6e52fba65e04f6451b4cdfd9c4.tar.gz

Then copy the firmwares to /lib/firmware

With sudo cp -ax * /lib/firmware from the uncompressed folder.

Now reboot.

WiFi Works!

A quick check:

sudo dmesg | grep iwl

now gives:

[    3.118541] iwlwifi 0000:02:00.0: enabling device (0000 -> 0002)
[ 3.131361] iwlwifi 0000:02:00.0: api flags index 2 larger than supported by driver
[ 3.131386] iwlwifi 0000:02:00.0: TLV_FW_FSEQ_VERSION: FSEQ Version: 93.8.63.28
[ 3.131767] iwlwifi 0000:02:00.0: loaded firmware version 59.601f3a66.0 ty-a0-gf-a0-59.ucode op_mode iwlmvm
[ 3.217932] iwlwifi 0000:02:00.0: Detected Intel(R) Wi-Fi 6 AX210 160MHz, REV=0x420
[ 3.455465] iwlwifi 0000:02:00.0: base HW address: d8:f8:83:36:85:08
[ 3.480105] iwlwifi 0000:02:00.0 wlp2s0: renamed from wlan0

And it appears on gnome-settings and connects just fine. Perfect.

Bluetooth troubles

Checking for Bluetooth:

sudo dmesg | grep Blue

Still gives:

[ 159.678214] Bluetooth: hci0: Intel Read version failed (-22)
[ 159.678255] Bluetooth: hci0: Intel reset sent to retry FW download

which means it cannot read the new firmware, so we need to investigate the location of the file and why it is not loaded.

Note: It appears even 5.10.1 cannot identify the *Bluetooth, also known as Intel Typhoon Peak Bluetooth, USB ID 8087:0032 properly.

On a post here it seems the patch to make the kernel identify it is merged for 5.11.

And so we wait.
