Feature planning: Reducing reliance on globally registered name

To allow usage as a library, we need to reduce our usage of globally registered
names (such as cache & store tables) and instead pass down PIDs and references
of processes and tables that we want to call.

We should first figure out whether we want to do this in the first place. I
would be happy for input here, perhaps @jb3 and @Kraigie you have some thoughts
on it?
