Is your feature request related to a problem?

One thing I really liked in Google Sheets is that I was able to remove blank columns and rows. This is practical for using spreadsheets to create "sort of" web applications or official documents.

Describe the solution you'd like

Here's a video showing how I can achieve this in Google Sheets.

You simply select the columns and rows you want to get rid of and press delete.

Describe alternatives you've considered

There's no alternatives in Collabora at this time.

Additional context

I've been suggested by a forum moderator to create a feature request here on Github. Here's original forum post.

I'm trying to degoogle with Collabora and Nextcloud but the switch has been hard.

Instead of pressing "Delete", to accomplish the same thing...

In Collabora, you can:

  • Right-Click > Hide Columns
    • (Same in Excel 365 + LibreOffice.)

Perhaps this Enhancement Request can add a:

  • Delete shortcut = Hide

when used on "completely empty" rows/columns.

Note: Right now, in Collabora / LO Calc / Excel 365, pressing "Delete" actually just empties out and deletes the data inside the cells.

I haven't done extensive testing though, but it seems to me like Google Docs's Delete is the only outlier here + it's a "Google Docs-only shortcut".

And theirs might work "okay" because Google limits you to a very small spreadsheet size (by default, looks like only 1000 rows down and a few dozen rows wide).

But still... could potentially be helpful functionality + a nice addition to Collabora. Let's see what others/devs have to say! :)

I never used more than maybe 500 rows and 100 columns in my whole life. I wouldn't say that Google limits you to a very small spreadsheet since you can add as many rows and columns you want. I believe they do this for performance. Why having an infinite amount of rows and columns when 100% of the people can't use infinite. It's theoretically impossible.
